#19057 — Desktop Icon, please.

FromDaniel70 <daniel47@eternal-september.org>
Date2025-05-05 20:44 +1000
SubjectDesktop Icon, please.
Message-ID<vva4q5$a136$1@dont-email.me>
As I dual-boot Windows (Win11, in this case) and Linux, and (as far as I
know) you can't get MSOffice for Linux, my preference is to use
Libreoffice on both OSs.

I've downloaded Libreoffice and installed it onto my SSD .... but how do
I get a Desktop icon to start it.

Not a 'Start' menu link but an actual icon on my Desktop?? Which of the
'programs' in the Windows (C:)\Program Files\libreoffice\program
directory do I want to connect to??

(Note in that folder, there is a file called 'desktophelper.txt' which
contains "# File used for desktop link" ... and that's it. Real Helpful.
;-) )

TIA

I just downloaded LibreOffice for windows 11. After the install was
complete, there was a group icon that when clicked gave assess to all of
the LibreOffice modules.

Once loaded, I could go into the Windows 11 start menu and scroll down
the list of all applications. When the LibreOffice modules I wanted were
found, I could copy them to the desktop as a short cut.

I placed them on the toolbar, so I use "More" from the right click
popup, to add them to the task bar.

I am setting up a new computer, fought for nearly a week to get the
computer to access other LAN resources, but gave up when trying to get
access to the Church's subscription to MS 365. I could not afford
another week of hassle, as I needed the computer. I am not the
subscription own, but a user. It was just not worth the hassle of
jumping through the hoops to get access.

I had never used LibreOffice before, but loaded it because it was not
Microsoft. Once I started using it, I no longer had to fight the
ribbon menu, having to search for everything I wanted to do. What
really got frustrated me, was with the search, they did not tell you
where the functions was but activated the function.

Try "C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.exe"

They all start with S, a weird leftover from Star Office.
You can right-drag swriter.exe, or any of the others, to
the Desktop and select Create Shortcut Here. The EXE
extension and unique icons make it clear what's what.

Ah!! so I can't have just one Icon and then, when LibreOffice has
started THEN select which ever function I want!!

.... or, whilst scrolling down the list of files, I noticed
"soffice.exe" so dragged it to the Desktop and ended up with an icon
called "soffice.exe - Shortcut" and, double clicking on that got me what
I wanted.

Now to Edit the icon to read "Libreoffice" .... too easy.

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with Linux, but does it have any sort of file browser
the equivalent of Windows Explorer?

If so, surely the better practise is to navigate to the file of
interest, and double click to open it. The OS will recognise the file
type and open the relevant app (LibreOffice in your case). I imagine
there's a feature which allows you to specify the default app for each
file type.

In the very rare case that you want to create a completely new document
from scratch I accept that you want to open the app first - but then you
have the problem of deciding where to save that new document. Possibly
better to copy a template file to that location, then rename and edit
that template file.

On Linux, I usually employ the Konquer (??) Desktop Environment (KDE)
and yes, it does have an Explorer equivalent (names eludes me at this
moment).

Doesn't everybody save their documents in their prefered folder?? i.e.
in my case 'Temp' ;-P

Yes you can, use soffice.exe instead of swriter/scalc etc, it's an
overall launcher fr the entire suite.

No, everything you want to do, is in there.
all the required degrees of freedom are there (In the Program Folders
and via the vast collection of EXE files).

LibreOffice wants to pretend their stuff is a "suite", which is
why they make the presentation window the way it is done.

*******

Just for fun, use the File Explorer and look in here.
Put this string in the File Explorer box at the top.
You can keep this open while you work.

    %AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

What that shows, is the Shortcut files used by pinned items on the TaskBar.

I started LibreOffice launcher on the Test Machine (it's installed under Win10 but
not under Win11 at the moment). That brings up their start window with all
the tool names on the left, as the LibreOffice launcher.

Now, say that I select the Writer icon on the left, and I am pretending
to create a writer document. The icon on the taskbar changes to writer.
The window itself changes to writer.

Now, if I go down to the Taskbar and "pin" the item to the TaskBar,
then the above folder gets a new entry. It gets a "shortcut for swriter.exe".
Do properties on the new Swriter shortcut in

   %AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

You can see, that is just the kind of shortcut you could use to start SWriter directly.
After you have captured a copy of the shortcut in that folder, and done whatever
you want with it (copy onto the desktop), you can "unpin" the taskbar item
again, and the shortcut will disappear from that folder. You can now start
LibreOffice again, this time selecting a different tool, and harvesting its
shortcut the same way.

The purpose of this charade, is to avoid typing all sorts of shit
and making a shortcut manually :-) It's not a good method. But
it's an illustrative method.

*******

In the File Explorer, you can enter this in the box.

   shell:AppsFolder

And that shows launchers for a whole bunch of stuff. Some might be
win32 launchers, some are Metro Launchers for "Apps". Not all of the
shortcuts in there, are conventional, and working in there is
an advanced topic. Metro Apps do not allow their shortcuts to be
edited, which is a considerable nuisance.

You cannot profitably make use of that right now, but if you
keep a notes file, record that location for future usage.

The facilities provided for Metro (loader logic), are gruesomely bad,
but it is what it is. Just imagine if LibreOffice ever switched
away from win32 executables some day, what a pain in the ass it
would be to do stuff.

*******

On Linux, you use Desktop files, to define launchers for material.
A lot of packages, like .deb packages, will include a desktop file
so that a launcher will be created for you. Some toys people install,
are handmade, and the launcher unfortunately in that case, is also
handmade by the person manually building the software. In its own way,
just as crude as the illustration above.

You put it in the 'Search' box (upper-right). You should put it in the
'path' [1] box, i.e. the box in the middle.

If *that* fails, you get a 'Windows can't find ...' error. If *that*
happens, just start with '%AppData%' (should be
'C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming') and browse from there to the full
path.

  You can't, so you didn't! :-)

BTW, the 'Internet Explorer' part is probably just a legacy thingie.
No worries, mate! :-)

[1] Does someone know the official name of that <beep> box? With an

You mean the address bar?

Yes, that's the 'thing' I mean. But is that the official - i.e.
Microsoft designated - name?

I have used the term 'address bar' before, by lack of an official/
'better' name.

Personally, I don't consider 'address bar' too great, because (IMO)
it's not really an 'address' in the normal sense, but a path. OTOH,
lacking a better term, 'address bar' isn't too bad.

It's what I've known it by since forever. Some more references:

https://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2163343&seqNum=2
https://www.customguide.com/windows-10/file-explorer

You can enter a path on a volume which is an address. You can enter a
URL which is an address. You can specify special locations, like
shell:appsfolder. The special destinations are defined at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions

but under GUIDs that you then have to trace back into the registry. For
example, the {1e87508d-89c2-42f0-8a7e-645a0f50ca58} subkey points at the
apps folder (shell:appsfolder). shell:startup points to your Windows
account's Startup folder, shell:common startup (with the space
character) is the common (All Users) Startup folder. Those are
addresses to special paths. there are dozens and dozens of these shell
special locations.

https://ss64.com/nt/shell.html
https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/shell-commands-to-access-the-special-folders/

The address bar is sometimes called the location bar.

The address bar started showing the "bread crumb" path where tokens are
presented for each node (folder) in the path. Instead of walking down a
tree list, you could click on a breadcrumb token to jump directly to
that folder. I never thought a breadcrumbed path was easier to navigate
than a tree, but there could be places where a tree is not listed, like
a Browse dialog for where to save a file.

https://www.jam-software.com/shellbrowser_net/components.shtml
ShellAddressBar
The ShellAddressBar mimics the breadcrumb bar known from Windows File
Explorer.

The element is still referenced as the address bar. I think the
breadcrumbs view showed up in Windows 7, but it's been so long that I
don't want to bother its introduction. I rarely use breadcrumbs, but I
have used them to bounce between folders without using the tree list.
Microsoft started calling it the breadcrumb bar, but that did not sway
the users away from the prior name, and which still encompasses this
element in File Explorer. To get rid of the breadcrumb view, click at
the end to flatten to the backslash-delineated path string.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/design/controls/breadcrumbbar

When File Explorer was previously called Windows Explorer, that element
was called the address bar. Back in Windows 95, you just had the tree
list, and no address bar.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/22/File_Manager_Windows_10_screenshot.png

According to:

https://gekk.info/articles/explorer.html

the address bar showed up in File Manager in Windows 98 released 26
years ago, and had an "Address" label on the element. The "Address"
element title disappeared in Windows Vista, but we still had to call it
something, so it kept getting called by what it had been called before.

Thanks for that! So at that (Windows 98) time, it was not just called/
named 'address bar', but actually *labeled* as such, 'Address'.

According to the screen shots, it was still labeled 'Address' in XP,
but unlabeled in Vista and ever since, though 10 and obviously 11.

So 'address bar' it is! Thanks again.

Technically, it's a URI bar, and "address" is an appropriate twisting
of the name. I would much prefer to describe it as a <beep> box
and not have to explain this to people. It's a URI box, because
\\wallace\shared is a particular format for locating something.
Another format being C:\users\username . There are some other namespaces
that may or may not work. If you enter a thing that a browser might
understand, File Explorer will start your browser for you!
(Note: Do not make a habit out of doing that.)

As for Daniel70s referral to his prowess as a searcher, the
actual search box in the upper right corner of File Explorer,
has some "issues" with the completeness of searches.

cat <=== No (incomplete result, misses stuff)
filename:cat <=== Still No (incomplete result, misses stuff)
filename:*cat* <=== This will likely return a few more results

    ext:c               <=== returns source.c but also returns keyboard.cat , simply dreadful limitation
ext:"c" <=== returns source.c but you have to remember to enter it this way...

It doesn't support regex, so you cannot tame any bad tendencies the search box has.

ext:^c$ <=== would have returned source.c , but does not work, as ^$ special meaning not supported
filename:^cat <=== This would have meant "begins with cat"... if it had worked.
I'm sure, eventually, with enough attempts, you would find a working syntax.

The constant need to "think up punctuation" spoils the fun.

One of the reasons for using Agent Ransack (a brute force search program),
is the behavior is a bit more predictable, and I cannot really
complain too much about the results. The File Explorer search on the
other hand, the users may not really know exactly what they're missing.
I only discover how much stuff these searches miss, by accident. Agent Ransack
(mythicsoft.com and is their free version) works best if your computer
has an SSD or an NVMe for storage, as the wait for your answer is more
tolerable then. The "sorting" in Agent Ransack, on the results, is more
in line with the actual computation cost, whereas File Explorer can
be slow at times.

Microsoft really could have done a better job on the SearchIndexer.
It could have been made lightning fast (simple: make the bloody
filename-only tick box work properly). Indexing only the filenames,
would have pleased users a lot more, than the behavior that has
existed for at least the last fifteen years. Instead of learning
that people "hate the growing green bar" and fixing it, they
change the green bar into a rotating circle (yikes!). What in
the name of progress does that mean ???

But I suppose now, it'll be replaced by AI, and the search result
will only take an hour to come back :-)

   Paul
