O.K., this time (pasting it into the address bar) I got two items .... a
"File Explorer" link and a SeaMonkey link and, dragging this SeaMonkey
icon to the Desktop got me my clickable link.

Thank you.

Create a shortcut to desktop of this EXE:

"C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.exe"

It should have added entries in the Start menu. Right-click on a
LibreOffice program entry in the Start menu, select More, and then File
Location. That opens File Explorer with the program file already
selected (highlighted). Right-click on the executable file, and select
Create Shortcut. You might be told you cannot create a shortcut in that
folder, and to create it on the desktop which is where you want it,
anyway.

The option is checked by default, but the OP could have unchecked it.

Yeap, (with some slight modifications) that did work and created a Icon

Or you could just drag that icon to the Desktop. But
with one caveat: A Start Menu icon dragged to the Desktop
will disappear from the SM. A shortcut dragged TO the
SM will copy it. (Just drag the shortcut and hover over the
Start button to open the SM for dropping.)

This has worked since Win95 or so. Though I haven't tried
using the Metro billboard Start Menu. I find it completely
unusable and ridiculous, so it's one of the fist things I fix
when making Win10/11 usable. Nevertheless, I'd guess
the drag/drop still works.

I don't think I've tried it on Win11, but it works fine for
me on Win10. And if I right-drag I can choose "Copy Here".
However, as noted, I don't use the Metro
SM. I have Classic/Open Shell, so my SM is like 9x/XP/7.
It's possible that the Metro SM is painting a dysfunctional
skin over the real thing.

I find the Metro mess so irritating that I really haven't
used it at all. It's just too confusing figuring out what I'm
looking at with all the irrelevant noise. And it's ugly. It's
designed to emulate a cellphone UI, which makes no sense.
So I'm not sure that I've ever even seen whatever Metro
SM presents as being the Programs menu.

I'm hoping that Nadella has the sense to ban the GUI "team"
from using cellphones except for emergencies. It doesn't
work to have cellphone addicts designing desktop OSs.

As I mentioned, dragging is a bad idea, because you want a *copy* of
the shortcut, not *remove* the shortcut from the (Windows 11) 'Start'
menu.

So go again to the icon in the 'Start' menu, bug now: right-click ->
More -> Open file location. You're now in File Explorer and the desired
icon/shortcut is highlighted. So do: right-click -> Show more options ->
Copy. Now move your pointer to the Desktop -> right-click -> Paste
shortcut. And voila!

(N.B. Of course many roads lead to Rome, so this is just one way. For
example I would just use Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V to copy/paste.)

(N.B.2. This works for normal programs (.exe in 'Program Files' or
'Program Files (x86)'), not for 'Apps' because for those you don't have
shortcuts in the 'Start' menu which you can copy. I assume that
LibreOffice is still Normal Software(TM).)

Yes, that works. But as I said in my other response, I'm not a
drag-type of person! :-) So, I rather use some copy/paste method (and
(occasionally) cut/paste [1]).

[1] For file/folder transfers, I still miss the old 'Move' facility of
File Explorer. For that, cut/paste feels counter-intuitive and
'dangerous'.

Thanks for that! I never dragged anything from the/a Start menu, but
if I ever would like to do that, I would indeed use copy/paste instead
of drag, because removing an item from the Start menu is not something I
would normally like to do.

> This has worked since Win95 or so. Though I haven't tried

FYI, I just did a drag from the Open-Shell Menu (to the Desktop) and
indeed the item was removed from the 'Programs' part of the Open-Shell
Menu, so it indeed seems to be generic behaviour. Probably also for the
native Windows 11 'Start' menu, but I have not tried that.

  Thanks again.

I don't know if this has been resolved so for Windows 8.1 (I believe you
have to extend the first menu in W11) ....
Find the .exe of the file, right click, select 'Send to' then 'Desktop
(create a shortcut).
The right click shows a context menu - because the menu is only relevant
to the type of file you clicked on.
Shortcuts are just that. They can be created & deleted without affecting
the parent application.

I'm using C:\Programs\LibreOffice\program\soffice.exe

I also have a link for just the text writer, which iirc is swrite.exe.
It saves a tiny bit of time to not have to choose which part of LO to
run.

I think what I"ve done is sometimes is just click on things to see which
one starts the program, which ones either appear to do nothing or do
something I'm not interested in.

Newyana reminds me it's swriter, and he even explains the s.

That's the whole package but I was talking about the word processor. One
can start that directly and save a few seconds. It's been a couple days
now but I thought that was the subject.

So when you start writer, what does Task Manager say the name is ?

There has to be some whizzy way to figure this out, right ?

Looking in the Program Files folder would take all the fun out of it.

Well, I have two icons in my task bar and the popup/tip for one is
LibreOffice Writer and for the other LibreOffice Calc. I didn't choose
these words, wouldn't know how.

And when I start writer, Task Manager just says LibreOffice.

By looking?

I really want to keep the fun.

It seems a weird pile of stuff. The EXE are all small (which is OK),
a few of the DLL are pretty large.

$ file *
sbase.exe: PE32+ executable (GUI) x86-64, for MS Windows
scalc.exe: PE32+ executable (GUI) x86-64, for MS Windows
sdraw.exe: PE32+ executable (GUI) x86-64, for MS Windows
senddoc.exe: PE32+ executable (console) x86-64, for MS Windows
simpress.exe: PE32+ executable (GUI) x86-64, for MS Windows
smath.exe: PE32+ executable (GUI) x86-64, for MS Windows

soffice.exe: PE32+ executable (GUI) x86-64, for MS Windows
soffice.bin: PE32+ executable (console) x86-64, for MS Windows

sweb.exe: PE32+ executable (GUI) x86-64, for MS Windows
swriter.exe: PE32+ executable (GUI) x86-64, for MS Windows

mergedlo.dll: PE32+ executable (DLL) (console) x86-64, for MS Windows <=== large DLL

I guess I had been looking at it this way. And launching an item from here.
I can open LibreOffice Writer from in here.

    explorer shell:appsfolder

    [Picture]

     https://i.postimg.cc/MTLkfWvF/Libre-Office-Tasks.gif

The swriter task then launches the soffice exe and bin. The bin would
in another environment, be an executable too. The soffice exe seems
to drive the GUI, the soffice.bin is related to the program logic.

When they are launched in a different order (soffice.exe first),
then the swriter.exe is hidden, and my tools don't hint that it is
even being used. (The Process Explorer stack sample, does not even
hint at it, the soffice.exe seems overly curious about my video card
and that is about it). Perhaps this implies that all the EXE are loaded
within the actual boss.

If we were at police headquarters, I would put up a powerpoint slide,
showing a picture of this item, labeled "The Real Gang Leader". Doesn't
drive a fancy car, but is calling the shots. Even though its parent
is soffice.exe, all that soffice.exe has is the OpenGL viewing window
and not the program logic for opening .doc files.

swriter.exe <=== Enough of a wrapper, to launch the other two
      soffice.exe     <=== GUI render
soffice.bin <=== Program logic, suite members in here
                              "The Real Gang Leader"

This is almost as bad as working with Firefox Quantum in Windows, and
not having the tasks labeled properly. If you look in Linux, the strings
there hint at the arrangement. The Linux has better labels for
discerning who is the gang leader, and who drives the getaway car.
