#16399 — New purchase of Microsoft office, no key, cab file, no M$O

Message-ID<vmhskp$1aors$1@dont-email.me>
Hi All,

A customer ordered a new computer from Lenovo. The invoice
shows she paid for M$ Office 2024 Home and Student Edition.
Lenovo no longer gives you a key:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht505479-windows-support-center-office

The computer was wiped and W11 reinstalled. Lenovo tech support
sent me a link to a cab file which does not install office.
It just activates Office. What Office? Lenovo's chat support
says to follow the steps in the link above, but the link above
does nothing to reinstall Office if it was ever there before.

<editorial comment> AAAAAHHHHH!!!!! </editorial comment>

How do I get Office so the cab file can activate it?

Many thanks,

-T

Login to your or your customer's Microsoft Account to get a download
link. The link should be in the account.

The link posted by you is quite clear that you need a Microsoft Account
to activate your Office product.

> You will not receive a physical product key to activate your software. For security reasons, Lenovo does not have access to your key. The license is assigned to the serial number associated with the hardware Office or Microsoft 365 was purchased with.

Her M$ Account is under the same eMail address as the order
was made. There is no link.

> The link posted by you is quite clear that you need a Microsoft Account

Indeed. And she has one.

There is NO SIGN of any purchases or subscription in the
last three months.

No sign of a subscription or purchase either.

So, if Lenovo did not put a purchase up in her M$ account,
how is the cab file downloaded suppose to activate a
nonexistent copy of M$ Office?

Would it be better for her if you cancelled her first purchase
of M$O and replaced the order? Maybe that would actually get
the link up in her M$ Account?

Many thanks,
-T

Are you sue it is "Office 2024 Home and Student Edition" I only see
"Office Home 2024"
Microsoft has always supplied a link in the user's MS Account but you
need to activate it first by signing to the account from Office App for
the entry to appear in the account. <https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/use-the-office-offline-installer-f0a85fe7-118f-41cb-a791-d59cef96ad1c>

The other option is to use the Deployment tool to download the App but
it has only Professional+ and LTSC.

Before you wiped the disk, was the product activated? If the answer is
yes then I am surprised Microsoft Servers don't have the entry for this.

If she can cancel the product then it is a good idea because then she
can buy the Professional+ with all the Apps.

If she can't cancel then you will need to reset the machine to factory
settings by using whatever means Lenovo has for this. There must be a
hidden partition on the disk unless you have deleted that as well. DELL
allows users to download the factory image so ask Lenovo if they have
something similar.

Indeed, my memory was flawed:

That look like what was missing. She eMailed me everything she
got sent to her from Lenovo. That was not one of them.

I will try remoting into her on Monday and testing. I will
get back with the results.

No.

For a total wipe and reinsall, were do I get the link
you sent me? I was on the chat line for over an hour
and they never mentioned a thing about the link. Next
time, where do I go for the link? My customer are downright
tickled with Tiny 11 (a release of Windows 11 with most
of the garbage removed). This is not the first one I have done,
but it is the first one with Lenovo's new Office licensing scheme.

There was nothing on the disk when I reinstalled. And it does
shows as activated.

Since you seem to know the customer involved, there is
another issue for you to fix: the monitor she ordered
came directly from the accessories page when she was
order in the computer. I told her that was good because
Lenovo would not sell her a monitor that was not
compatible with her new computer from the computer
order accessories page. I was wrong. I sold her a
D-port to HDMI adapter and she is happy.

I recommend your business grade computers a lot and
assist customer with purchasing them. Would you have
the powers that be, make sure all the accessories on the
order page for the computer are compatible?

Many thanks,
-T

You need to educate your customers that using something created by
one-man hobbyists is not a good idea, especially on a business machine.
Send them a link to this video:

Wow! That was reaching.

All the spying and other garbage in W11 is a
billion times worse than anything not in
Tiny-11.

With stock W11, the use is the product. With
Tiny-11, the user is the customer.

Tx for that link. It's all kind of obvious, but no harm in having the
dangers explained in detail. Interestingly, the next video that
autoplayed is by the same guy ...

Making Windows Faster without Tools
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOz_foQcPcY

... and again quite a lot of it is obvious.

Be carfull with this link. The contents of the link
are all very valid, but the title is "click bait".

The second comment says it all:

      @stevewhalen3458

Reporting you: your clickbait thumbnail says Tiny11
INFECTED but your video has general info about what
might happen with custom ISO's only. No info about
what is infected int Tiny11. The warnings about
custom ISO's are valid, but your clickbait about
INFECTED with no proof has cost you the respect
I HAD deveoped for you over the years.

His statement is a conflict of interest.

Lenovo includes it own spyware. You can remove it
with Malware Bytes.

I have been doing quite a few Tiny-11 in the past
few months. This is the first M$ OS I have liked in
a long while.

Oh and look at the results of the Linux kernel. The
programmers working on it are ALL "hobbyists",
which is another word for "volunteers"

I bought "Office 2021 Pro plus" on ebay for $70 and it came with the
key.
Then I phoned MSoft for a phone activation (took a long time).
That's it.
No MSoft Account needed.

I'm doing it again soon, as soon as I've rid the computer of MSoft365
and all past accounts, to start over.

I have survived (so far) to tell thee!

Did you wipe the device and reinstall the Lenovo as shipped image, or did
you wipe, the device and clean install Windows using Win11 media?
  - if the latter, the OEM purchase will not be present.

i.e. do not proceed to Go, return to Lenovo Avenue and and roll the dice
again.

Complete wipe and reinstall with Windows 11 (Tiny -11)
