Companies HAVE tried something else. In fact, in my own field, school 
boards have tried Linux. I asked about it a while back and the story was 
always the same: networking was a nightmare as was support. It wasn't a 
lack of knowledge from the techs either, too many problems surfaced for 
them and they decided that the payoff wasn't worth the cost. The more 
reasonable approach for them was to deploy LibreOffice on Windows 
computers, but even that was a disaster as the teachers insisted on 
using Microsoft Office for whatever reason, even when it wasn't 
available to them on a given computer. Formatting issues seems to have 
been the biggest gripe, especially among math teachers.

If the audience asks for options, we give them the options.

That's what this place is for.

But the assembled audience, also knows the education level of the
visitors. What is taught in our schools ? For example, no matter
what platform you're headed for, if you "can't make a USB stick",
you are kinda screwed.

In fact, you will attract exactly zero of the audience, because
if you put on your magical reality glasses, you would see the head-down
tribe trundling along the landscape. And the head-down tribe is the
lost generation, not redeemable, can't be hooked up to any desktop
at all. They're just too fucking busy, scrolling with what is
left of their thumb.

So why be delusional ? Be realistic. You can save the ones that have
not been absorbed into the SmartPhone matrix. The rest are a dead loss.
They will be neither Windows users nor Linux users. And they won't
be Mac users, because the middle class is hollowed out, and nobody has
the money for flashy tat.

I prefer a simpler window manager, not a desktop manager. My goto for years has
been Fluxbox, with an occasional excursion into Xfce4.

When I do boot to Windows (mainly to build a Windows version of my code), I
find it kind of like running and suddenly hitting beach sand.

I beef up that environment with MSYS2, Git Bash, VLC, vim/gvim,
and MingW dev tools.  Oh, and Qt Creator.

When I had to use Windows at work, I'd add Libreoffice, at least for small
unofficial documents.

Not used that, and each to his own, but my favourite is TextPad, which 
is trial ware, and doesn't cost much if you decide to opt in*.  IMO, 
it's about the best text or programming editor out there:

Another silly argument, IMO.  You can use notepad as you always have for 
free.  With the integration of AI into the equation, things just much 
more complex.  This requires much more involvement from MS, and cost 
much more with just the power needs of the AI alone.

Since I have no desire to use notepad in this manner, I really could 
give a crap one way or the other.  However, to think that MS should just 
give it away and eat the costs involved seems ridiculous to me.  It's 
just more MS bashing from the usual sources.

Based on what exactly, can you say "it works"?
We don't know how many people have paid for AI Credits to use it.

If it was within Word, I could understand it some people being 
interested, but I want stuff in notepad to be verbatim what I 
typed/pasted there, no extra spaces let alone flowery extra paragraphs.

    I meant it works in the sense that people assume there's
some value there. George Ruch jumped in to push Notepad++
as a free way to get what's provided in paid Notepad.

   As I understand it, one can't buy credits. Rather, the more you
spend renting MS software, the more uses of Copilot you get.
To use it regularly you need a "Pro" account. So I suppose we
could say that credits in non-pro MS 365 rental amount to a
marketing ploy.

    N++ is one of a dozen rough coding editors for people
who don't like convenience. Not small. 21 MB. Its one
useful feature is that it can easily load very large files.

   The feature in Notepad that requires an account is AI.
So this has nothing to do with Notepad per se, which
is a small and simple editor for note taking and small text
files.
