Companies HAVE tried something else. In fact, in my own field, school 
boards have tried Linux. I asked about it a while back and the story was 
always the same: networking was a nightmare as was support. It wasn't a 
lack of knowledge from the techs either, too many problems surfaced for 
them and they decided that the payoff wasn't worth the cost. The more 
reasonable approach for them was to deploy LibreOffice on Windows 
computers, but even that was a disaster as the teachers insisted on 
using Microsoft Office for whatever reason, even when it wasn't 
available to them on a given computer. Formatting issues seems to have 
been the biggest gripe, especially among math teachers.
