This sort of thing might actually work on Windows with its uniculture.

But I don't see it working particularly well in Linux because there are too
many variations in distros/desktops/window managers/setups for it to work
as envisaged. There are too many 'exceptions to the rules' to be handled and
it will become a veritable 'can of worms'. 

Ferinstance, when I try to blindly copy my home directory from my desktop to
my laptop, even though they're supposedly running the same distro and
version, I get imcompatibilities.  Some programs are present on the desktop
but not on the laptop, meaning that various launcher-icons do not function.

If I move from (say) Mint to (say) Debian, **even when using the same home
directory partition with two different distros** the range of
incompatibilities is even worse.  Sometimes, I have different desktops,
(say) LXDE and MATE installed, which means that I might not be able to even
move a window from one screen location to another.

Then, again, I might be a member of a group on one machine but not on the
other, (assuming that group actually exists on that other machine). And all
of the subtle problems that incurs.

I see nothing but pain ahead for users of homed. Unless of course, we become
a clone of the Windows mindset, with tightly specified sets of
configurations.
