This had me wonder whether that would work with something like
Firefox where updates are frequent, and ESR releases might be
used in some places. The user's profile would be "downgraded"
every time the older Firefox version was run. It seems this is
unsupported, and has been broken in the past:

At the same time you're bound to want Firefox's bookmarks, history,
plug-in configurations etc. shared between different systems as much
as, or more than, anything else. So keeping completely separate
profiles for the different Firefox versions (.mozilla/firefox-x)
would be defeating the purpose.
