IBM never understood the consumer market. A simplistic explanation comes
from 'Business Machines'. Build the hardware and then develop the software
to run on it. Unfortunately for them they lost control of the PC hardware.

That whole era was a cluster. Bell couldn't sell Unix directly but
Microsoft licensed it and called it Xenix since they didn't have rights to
the name. Bell was broken up and AT&T became a new player and sold System
5. Microsoft didn't think they could compete and transferred Xenix to SCO.
That's when they started to work on OS/2 with IBM since they realized a
single user/single task OS wasn't going to cut it.

Meanwhile IBM was working on AIX with Interactive Systems, mostly
targeting RS/6000. Interactive also targets 386 machines. I imagine it was
scrapped 20 years ago but we had a machine creatively named BigBoBo that
ran interactive and the code base may still have references to interactive
in the legacy make files.

Then there was the SCO versus IBM suit that dragged on for 20 years.

Starting with Windows 2000 Server MS finally had something resembling a
real OS. Enterprises looked at the cost of generic Intel hardware versus
RS/6000 systems and the switch began. IBM soldiers on:

https://revenuesandprofits.com/how-ibm-makes-money-understanding-ibm-
business-model/

A friend spent his entire career in IBM's semiconductor operation and
retired just before they sold it off.

https://www.computerworld.com/article/2835940/ibm-exits-semiconductor-
business-and-recreates-itself.html

That didn't go well. IBM sued GlobalFoundries for not producing the 7nm
ships they had agreed to manufacture. GlobalFoundries has sued IBM twice,
the latest for sharing IP with the Japanese firm IBM is working with on 2
nm tech.

All in all it's been an interesting 40 years.
