I am a spelling reformer and a member of
http://www.spellingsociety.org/ One of the problems of spelling for
English is that we only have only 26 letters for 44 sounds. One of the
things we do is to use two letters together to write one sound, eg
'th' for the teeth on tongue sound in "the". The trouble with that we
sometimes want to use them to sound separately, as in "foothold". So
we need more letters, handwriting is not a problem, we can all learn,
the big obstacle is mechanised text, and here technical progress has
been in favour of reform, there are more letters, with unicode
codings. All modern screens and printers will show and print these
characters. We cannot let a subsequent text editor combine t + h to
give Þ unless it has a great deal of knowledge of what is and is not
corrent, in effect a spell-checker. How can we produce them on a
qwerty keyboard?

On possibility is to re-map the keyboard, as is done for German and
the Scandinavian languages. How easy is it to produce such a
re-mapping in way that can be supplied to users? There seems to be a
limit to the number of new letters that can be produced, am I right?

Another possibility is to use two keys held down together to produce
the new letter, for example t pressed down with h produces the symbol
for the voiced th in 'the' = Þ, and d pressed down with h produces the
symbol for the unvoiced th in 'thistle' = ð. These letters exist in
both capital and small forms, Þ þ Ð ð, so capitalisation has to be
thought of. The "other" keys might be ctrl and alt-ctrl.

Spell-checkers are not a problem, they can be modified. All
dictionaries are databases recording the standard spelling of a word,
its grammatical changes (the plural form, the tenses etc), a
definition of its meaning and the pronunciation, even if they don't
show all these entries. The pronunciation can be reworked into
whatever standard has been chosen. What's needed is to reverse the
correct and incorrect, make the phonetic form correct and the standard
form incorrect.

The bottle-neck is getting it right in the first place, to produce the
new letters straight off the keyboard. What are the possibilities?
