Sorry, I have zero memory left except I didn't find explaination
online fer the errors I did get. Syslinux/Extlinux looked just as
good, so I didn't want to turn it into a day-long project wading
through mailing list archives and looking at source code to figure
out what changed.

I do know it's not just Grub though. Older versions of LOADLIN for
booting Linux from MSDOS won't boot newer kernels (even if no
initrd is used). An updated version here, "the newer 1.6f which
should work with nowadays kernel", does:

If you have time to compare the source code to see what changed,
let me know, I just saw I'm out of time now just for writing this
