Well, I posted a summary by ChatGPT that explained it, somewhere up the thread. You can find articles in internet that explain the same process. (BIOS machine, MBR or classical partitions context) Basically, boot sector (or MBR, irrelevant) points to some sectors at the start of the partition, or the track zero of the disk, that contain enough code to read the rest of the code from the /boot directory. It doesn't matter how you call that intermediate chunk of code. Time ago it was stage 1.5 It was a hack designed for machines that were invented in the 80's that did not contemplate booting several OSes. If you remember, previous to grub we used lilo. Each time files were written, we had to run something that what it did was store in the boot sector code the exact location in sector numbers of the files it had to read next. If you forgot that stage, the machine would not boot. Grub could decode the /boot filesystem, but that can not be coded in 200 bytes, it needs much more code, that has to be stored somewhere that is not a file, just sector numbers. If you have a BIOS machine booting a GPT disk, that intermediate code resides in a BIOS Boot Partition of 1 or 2 megabytes, without filesystem, just raw data. > >> possibility of core.img being in one filesystem (“the boot partition”) >> and prefix referencing another filesystem (“the OS partition”). EFI firmware can directly read files in a FAT partition. -- Cheers, Carlos. ES🇪🇸, EU🇪🇺;
