If you want to boot in PC BIOS, I think the usual way is to install the
bootloader to the MBR.

But to get to these parts, you need to go through the initial
parts. Carlos said it needed more storage than the MBR can provide to
load the code needed to read from the boot partition, Lawrence said it's
not necessary, so that gets me wondering how is the limitation Carlos
mentioned handled.

.efi and ESP suggests you're talking about a different bootstrapping
process than the one involving the MBR, and EFI firmwares hopefully are
more capable in this regard?
