Really? You can't read my body language or hear the tone of my voice
when I post to a newsgroup. Gee, I never knew that!

Ah yes. The Emoticon. But what *exactly* does the emoticon mean and what
does it do? (emoticontosignifycuriousity)

Does an emoticon make a contentious comment suddenly acceptable?

Does appending this ;) to a statment mean "the statement I just made is
to be taken as meaningless"? If so, then why just not resist the
temptation to make the comment (emoticontosignifyduh!).

Does this ;) mean I have made a real joke, or just one of those "flauw"
comments that Brits make, that pass for jokes between residents the
British Isles?

Is it a sign of the wish of the passive-aggressive person to avoid a
visible altercation at all costs? Stick a smiley at the end of the
sentence and no-one will get upset? ;)

Can you use this ;) to try to goad a long term adversary, and then turn
round and say "didn't you see the smiley"? 

Those are just a few of the interpretations relating to the use of a
smiley all of them with differing meanings. Thus, in much the same way
that it is impossible to 'read' body language of tone of voice on the
internet it is also pretty much impossible to know "exactly" what the
poster was trying to achieve when they added a smiley at the end of a
sentence.

Given that the smiley is such a blunt weapon, why bother using it?

IMHO using a smiley in public forums is really rather like parking on
double yellow lines and then putting your hazard warning lights on.

Clearly I should have used and emoticon when I made that statement. But
I take your point. Unfortunately, the modern tendency to errect walls
round parts of "our" "free" and "open" internet seems irreversible.
