Whether or not grammatical gender serves any actual purpose,
it is hardly unique to French. AFAIK, English is almost
alone among Indo-European languages in have lost the use of
grammatical gender. I do not know about gender in Frisian,
and I do know that Afrikaans has no grammatical gender.
This, though, is probably a special case, being isolated
from its roots, and also rubbing up against English for some
centuries.

It is easy to *get started* in English. And yes, in part
because of the lack of both grammatical gender and the
almost complete lack of cases.

But English has far more tenses (3 different present tenses
alone!) than French, let alone High German. And asking
questions in English (properly) is very complex.

And I have seen intelligent adults almost reduced to tears
by the way English uses prepositions.

Err...  Woe-king? But certainly not whoa-king, which (not
witch) includes an 'h' sound.

This is spelling, not language. If you can speak English,
but not read or write, it would all be completely
irrelevant.
