Weil es in dem Abschnitt
1.1 Some Basic Notation and Terminology
stattfindet und der Autor voraussetzt, dass diese Begriffe bereits
bekannt sind. Es sollen lediglich Sprech- und Schreibweisen kurz
eingeführt werden, um das Lesen zu erleichtern.
Der Titel "Foundations of Differentiable Manifolds and Lie Groups"
beschreibt eben genau das. Der zweite Satz aus dem Vorwort hilft
hier weiter:

Es gibt viele Werke. Dass in guten Büchern die verwendete Notation
festgelegt wird, ist ein sinnvoller Dienst am Leser, weil es immer mal
wieder Variationen in der Terminologie gibt (soll "kompakt" nun
"Hausdorff" beinhalten? Werden nur Ringe mit 1 betrachtet? Sind Körper
immer kommutativ? Sind Graphen immer schlicht? etc.). Weil mathematische
Literatur recht langlebig ist, wird man das als Leser kaum vermeiden
können und es ist gut wenn der Autor das bedenkt.
Das ändert aber nichts daran, dass sich die Bedeutung der meisten Begriffe
durch jahrzehntelangen Gebrauch hinreichend stabilisiert haben, so dass
diese Varianten keine Probleme für das Verständnis bereiten.
