Teh large freemail providers like Google and Apple are far less likely
to abandon email since it is one of the featured reasons for having an
account with them. It's not like an ISP where they see enail as a drain
on the money you pay for connectivity.

But yes, it is still a lock-in of sorts, but one that is far more
permissive than most and far less likely to be a problem. Also, since
they are not tied to an ISP account, it doesn't matter where you go or
what company connects you to the Internet, you always have access to
them.

That is the best solution, of course, but it is beyond most people.
