Verizon is transferring their email service to AOL servers.

I have been using Verizon POP mail with Mail.app on two iMacs (one 
for me, one for her) and an iPad. My wife and I both have multiple 
email addresses. I maintain her and my iMacs as the masters and use 
the iPad for mail only when travelling. So I have it set up that 
mail downloaded to the iPad is left on the server, but mail 
downloaded to a Mac is erased immediately. That works fine for me 
and I haven't bothered to convert to IMAP.

Now comes AOL and says POP3 always erases email as soon as 
downloaded. If they really mean that, then I cannot continue as I 
have been. When reading email on the iPad it will be necessary to go
to the AOL (ugh!) web site. I could do that but would much rather 
not.

Either that, or switch to IMAP. But here is the Catch 22: The AOL 
FAQ says that "Mac (Apple) Mail only supports POP3 protocol for 
Verizon migrated accounts."

Can that be true? Does anyone here have experience using Mail.app 
with AOL?

Can anyone recommend mail apps for Mac and iPad that work well with 
AOL IMAP? If so, how good is the Mac version at importing archived 
mailboxes from Mail.app? I have hundreds of archived emails sorted 
into dozens of mailboxes.

I'd much rather not switch mail providers because I have at least 
100 web sites that use one of my Verizon addresses as User ID and it
would be a real pain to go around changing all of those sites. I'm 
not even sure that I could change some of them.
