Proportional fonts don't stop it being correct.  You can still make a larger space with proportional fonts.

I was never taught it, but I saw some people doing it and realised it was much neater and easier to read, so I do it too.

I use both because I can never remember which is correct.  I can't see any logical reason why one is wrong.
