Keep in mind the read/seek error rates, spin-up time, seek performance,
and sector re-allocation counts reported by smartctl for the internal
Hitachi Travelstar drive are high which could result in slow system
performance and stalls during startup.

Something is apparently wrong with your prey installation, which could
potentially cause startup or login issues.

I don't recall whether PAM errors like this were common in whatever old
version macOS you are running. It appears you were trying and failing to
edit an APCUPSd configuration file as root.

/Library/StartupItems/HP Trap Monitor is malfunctioning during shutdown
(and possibly startup) which could potentially cause startup and login
issues.

You mentioned previously that you tried holding down the Shift key
during boot to disable startup items. If done correctly, that should
prevent these startup items from loading during that boot session.
