I'm still running Yosemite at the moment. You don't just select the
process and click the quit button in El Capitan?

I would have thought perhaps since it's a helper service it got
restarted automatically.

I haven't ever seen that happen up to and including Yosemite.

They've *always* been my go-to tools, but I'm fluent on the command line
and like the power of it in preference to a GUI tool. With that said,
I've used Activity Monitor in a handful of situations where it did
exactly what I expected and didn't misbehave. I've never seen beach ball
cursors in it that weren't related to bigger system issues, either.

How come? You think that's somehow related to Spotify or Activity Monitor
misbehaving?

If I have 24 GB of physical RAM on my machine, I'm not going to worry
about a relatively small amount being compressed and swapped, if there
are no other major system issues evident.
