Doesn't appear to hold water.  I have 24 GB of RAM and if 10-12 GB is 
used the OS finds some reason to use swap.  This is mysterious to me but 
there it is.

The nice thing about all this RAM is that the OS takes up plenty of it: 
kernel task alone is 1.55 GB.  That's what I want: as much OS as 
possible resident in memory at all times to avoid swaps.

See above.  Even when using a small portion of RAM, swaps occur.
