For my purposes, I rarely have less than 5 GB free.  And I do plenty of 
photo editing.  Little video.  If I did do more video, then I'd simply 
bump up the RAM.  If I was hard core I'd get a Mac Pro and bump it to 64 GB.

If I was seeing that sort of issue I would simply bump my machine from 
24 to 32 GB.
