Makes sense.  That's the only thing I can think of.

Where would the "Pathname too long" actually come from?  Is there a file 
of error messages the kernel uses?

I wonder why it would matter whether it was passed to xargs at the 
beginning of the list rather than the middle.  The actual error line 
doesn't correspond to any file at the beginning of the directory either, 
nor is it really all that long.

You are probably right but it is still very confusing.
