it's not surprising at all because the issue is not being invisible or
hidden, but that there's no way to create a file with \r in via the
keyboard, thereby making it impossible for there to be a name conflict.

had it been changed to .icon, not only would it be incompatible with
classic mac os, but if the user happened to name something with the
same name (easily done, since . is easy to type, even by accident), all
sorts of problems would occur.
