That has worked for me.  Just make sure that you close both Photos and 
Image Capture once you have done that. Once I did both of those things 
Photos does not open for SDHC cards from my X-E2 or CF cards from my 
D300S ever.

If I want to open Photos now I have to hunt it done and open it 
manually. Needless to say, I don't do that very often.
As for IC I use that for my Epson XP-610 all-in-one scanning.
