it's actually facebook that decided not to support it.

facebook has web stats that show how many visitors use older versions
of safari and it's not enough to justify maintaining support. there are
things they want to do that need a newer browser.

apple also no longer supports 10.8 either. it gets security updates but
that's about it (and probably not for much longer). 

10.9 and 10.10 are completely free and there is no reason not to update.

this graph is from last december which shows that just 7% use 10.8.
it's 73% for 10.9 or newer and that was 8 months ago. that number is
higher now.

most apps are separate. safari is an exception because webkit is part
of os x.

then install either or both on your mac. 

nobody is forcing you to use safari.
