I'm happy when people hand me printed brochures and catalogues. It is useful to have the PRMs as PDFs (on my netbook and the phone), but I wouldn't part with my paper versions. But I found a notice in the shop for a new contract at £5 per month, 50 mins any network rather than 20 mins Landline and Orange only. And they still gave me 15% loyalty discount. Before VAT that worked out at £3.54 a month. The only downside was that I had to *buy* a new handset and they naturally tried to get me to take something expensive. The cheapest (£20) was a rather nastly little Nokia which I nearly gave away to someone else, while I continued to use my LG KF300, which I liked. The cheapest here are Free and Sosh (an internet-only variant of Orange) which run to €15-20 per month. My contract is 500Mb data, 1 hour to landlines, and three nominated mobiles (any network) that are completely unlimited (limit is 2 or 3h per call, but you can hang up and call back - though is a smartphone battery good for much more than that?!? For that, plus a phone, plus a shorter (one year) contract, I pay €35/month. This is pricey (not unusual for France...), but cheaper offers mean I either lose the free mobile (okay, I might only rack up 4-5 hours a month to my mother, but it's something I'd pay for otherwise. It's better than browsing with RISC OS. :-( I also use Twitter and RSS Feeds instead of a newspaper. Better too. Free. Saves ££s a week. It may not be entirely logical, but if they are stored on a phone and you lose the phone, then you have lost everything. Entirely logical. Electronic gadgets have a distressing tendency to get lost, stolen, ceasing to work or somehow 'losing' a stored document. My daughter's Blackberry did the last just today when she tried to show some photographs she'd taken. Lots of photos but not the ones she wanted. Coupling the phone to a computer showed that they were all there but the phone refused to display them. It seemed to know there was something wrong and offered to do a repair but that's a bit lairy until she's done a backup. I always make duplicates, sometimes triplicates, of all documents when I travel - passport, insurance, tickets, addresses & phone numbers, driving licence, anything that might be useful and distribute it in different places plus copies on the web. People forget that documents stored on electronic devices are only accessible while the device is powered. I think he got charged the full single fare, but I am not sure because I was sitting too far away to eavesdrop successfully. I think the systems used on the trains involve the inspector scanning a 2D barcode, which presumeably records that the ticket has been used and prevents more than one person using the same ticket, but the inspector may not be able to look up the ticket in the database via the passenger's name. -- Matthew Phillips Durham
