Indeed.  On the train I saw the ticket inspector dealing with a passenger who
claimed to have a ticket on his phone which had a flat battery.  I think he
got charged the full single fare, but I am not sure because I was sitting too
far away to eavesdrop successfully.  I think the systems used on the trains
involve the inspector scanning a 2D barcode, which presumeably records that
the ticket has been used and prevents more than one person using the same
ticket, but the inspector may not be able to look up the ticket in the
database via the passenger's name.
