My code was forked. No one here could ever impress me by focusing on how my source code is hard to read, to the exclusion of _all_else_, including the reason the code was written for in the first place.

I come from the school where if you need to comment the code it's too
obscure. I will throw in a comment if I think it's necessary. Sometimes
it isn't too clear what's going on and the comment is as much for me 6
months from now as anyone.
Not to be a language chauvinist but it's good most people program in
English.
If(emergency())
{
stopTheFuckingCar();
}
else {
carryOnDriving();
}
Perfectly clear and self-documenting. At least for me if it was in
French, completely opaque.

If you can learn prolog, you can learn French
Most people don't bother with either.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
In practice, there is.

I put learning prolog right up there with APL as things to do. The
closest I came to APL was an IBM 5120 that had the alternate APL
character set on the keyboard. BASIC was the other option. They didn't
expect anyone to use it but there was an assembler too.
I never could figure out IBM's numbering scheme. The 5110/5120 sort of
followed on to the 5100 but the 5150 (PC) was completely different.

Agreed, if we write code, it should be *readable*...

Muscle memory. My right hand tends to rest on my mouse ( on my bedside desk ). No physical keyboard. A score of people there, mostly Chinese (and a few Malaysians), were expert programmers. But my job was in the warehouse and none of those programmers dealt with warehouse issues. On the other hand the company didn't want any software get direct programmatic access to their database in China which served _all_ those companies around the globe. So they wouldn't let us use SAP programmatically. After some push and pull they agreed that I emulate our own warehouse (three very large buildings) in Excel and do everything, the whole inventory control locally. This meant rewriting at least 10 or 15 different SAP programs from scratch in VBA! It was crazy and felt like abuse and torture but they offered me in return very good pay, and they sure benefited from that decision immensely, certainly seen in our own branch but by all probability utilizing them in every other branch in the world as well.
