No, it's job security built in. You either have to keep the only person
who can maintain the code, or toss the whole thing and start over from
scratch.

I didn't keep my for 30 years by being stupid.
My code was forked.

No one here could ever impress me by focusing on
how my source code is hard to read,
to the exclusion of _all_else_,
including the reason the code was written for in the first place.

I come from the school where if you need to comment the code it's too
obscure. I will throw in a comment if I think it's necessary. Sometimes
it isn't too clear what's going on and the comment is as much for me 6
months from now as anyone.

Not to be a language chauvinist but it's good most people program in
English.

If(emergency())
     {
     stopTheFuckingCar();
     }
else    {
     carryOnDriving();
     }

Perfectly clear and self-documenting. At least for me if it was in
French, completely opaque.

If you can learn prolog, you can learn French
Most people don't bother with either.

I put learning prolog right up there with APL as things to do. The
closest I came to APL was an IBM 5120 that had the alternate APL
character set on the keyboard. BASIC was the other option. They didn't
expect anyone to use it but there was an assembler too.

I never could figure out IBM's numbering scheme. The 5110/5120 sort of
followed on to the 5100 but the 5150 (PC) was completely different.

Agreed, if we write code, it should be *readable*...

No, "Dilbert.COM" should be readable.

Code should do what it's designed to do;

It's better to keep everything in one huge routine,
instead of scattering it all about.

Usually, you're working on only just a few lines anyway,
despite the massive number of lines in the function.

My 39 button mouse allows me to quickly jump around,
searching for this and that.

My Logitech mouse has 6 buttons; I'm not too sure what 2 of them do but
it's nothing good. It's wireless so one of them switches from the Linux
desktop to the Win10 laptop.

Would require one of those degrees that Alsing has got just so you could
use that mouse.

When I'm thinking and coding at the same time mouse itself is a
distraction. I do everything by keyboard. My hands don't need to leave
the keyboard. I use Jedit editor which allows me to configure any action
I want using the keyboard buttons only.

Want to be even more efficient? Remap the buttons to your own fingers'
preferences with AutoHotkey. They didn't call me "machine gun fingers"
for no reason :)

No distraction, no Alsing mouse bullshit. Keep it simple.

You're the opposite of Relf. You see, his goal is writing "compact"
code. That includes liberal use of macros, and even the elimination
of "white space". As any of that makes the code anything more than
superficially "compact". Readability by others counts for nothing.

It carries the touch of his character :) Or he's just playing with such
stuff. I doubt he could do that as part of his job unless people he
worked for didn't know anything about computers.

I wrote those Excel programs for a huge Chinese multinational
electronics and computer company (its U.S. branch). A score of people
there, mostly Chinese (and a few Malaysians), were expert programmers.
But my job was in the warehouse and none of those programmers dealt with
warehouse issues. On the other hand the company didn't want any software
get direct programmatic access to their database in China which served
_all_ those companies around the globe. So they wouldn't let us use SAP
programmatically.

After some push and pull they agreed that I emulate our own warehouse
(three very large buildings) in Excel and do everything, the whole
inventory control locally. This meant rewriting at least 10 or 15
different SAP programs from scratch in VBA! It was crazy and felt like
abuse and torture but they offered me in return very good pay, and they
sure benefited from that decision immensely, certainly seen in our own
branch but by all probability utilizing them in every other branch in
the world as well.

What I had at my disposal were smart secretaries, not programmers. They
were the ones to use them and even modify them later. So a "Jeff-Relff"
style would get a kick in the ass by plant manager before first week of
it was over. He'd be history.

When my girlfriend of the time took a COBOL course, it was impressed on
her that the really important stuff was analysing the business and
writing the specification for the data structure and the program modules.

Pure programmers who just turned specs into COBOL were only one step
above plant life.

'Anal Progs' were the next step up. But business analysts were the dog's
pyjamas.

Indeed. Too bad this advice isn't followed more often. In one shop
I actually wrote the programs first, then got the specifications.
I've since heard this approach described as "Ready... Fire... Aim."

They're usually called "coders" to distinguish them from people who think.

One PPOE's payroll system had a 15-character field for job title.
My position of programmer-analyst was truncated to PROGRAMMER-ANAL.
I thought it was appropriate.
