The nvidia driver has all > the 3D acceleration that the Intel one did not, despite a lot of those > features being there in hardware allwgedly. I see what you mean by "badly". However, that is a stupid way to put it. You are talking about a lack of 3D acceleration. However, even that hasn't hampered my non-game usage: full-screen flash and MOV/MPEG files on Intel hardware. >> >> HP? No support for Linux at all? Bullshit. >> > > Please tell me where I can find EXPLICIT support for an HP 1525n color > printer, so I can install the CORRECT drivers then. Is your printer in this list: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/recommended.html I will, however, RETRACT my "Bullshit" right now. Here's why: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html Note: HPLIP is an open source solution for most HP printers and all-in-ones. Some printers, however, are unsupported. The reasons for this may include issues with intellectual property, technical issues, or limited production numbers. Be advised that printers that appear on the unsupported list may never be supported by HPLIP. And the list is a LOT longer than I would have expected: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/unsupported.html Sounds like a Linux user should avoid anything with "DesignJet" in it. You're model is not in that list. I think you might be able to use this: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html I had to use that with our new HP printer (HP p1606dn laser). There's an even harder manual install (Debian shown): http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/debian.html >> Generally, I just forge ahead, and get it working if I have to. >> I rarely get bitten by that strategy, frankly. > > So do I, but there have been some complete failures. > > The scanner - again an HP scanjet 2400 - simply wasn't supportable with > anything I could find. > > I had to hand patch PPDS for a friends big A3 Ricoh color lasers. > > But the result was well worth it. > > Another minor annoyance is that Postscript still doesn't handle > transparent background images in PDF printing. > > Like you, I am happy to trade a bit of installation ease and slightly > lower access to 'feetchas' for a rock solid OS..I have just rebooted > this one after 6 weeks to install a kernel upgrade..the server hasn't > been rebooted since the last power cut in November :-) > > Ok I have a memory leak in Firefox 4, that means THAT needs daily > restarting, but its not the whole machine. > > I would never go back to Windows.
