Kept selling DC even as real world uses changed rapidly. So, for PRACTICAL purposes, 120vac was meant to be "close enough" to Edison's 90vdc "energy-wise". Low-voltage DC works just fine. Good stuff. Alas you can't transmit it far. Need a little power plant every few blocks. Tesla/Westlinghouse WON in the end - but it TOOK awhile.

Typically it tends to be multiple conductors instead. In the UK 400kV is the highest value it gets, a step up from my youth when it was 132kV. There are also links at 275kV. There is another limit which affects AC. Long connecting cables behave as a transmission lines, so a load at a quarter-wavelength distance will appear as an open circuit to the generator. The Russians found this when trying to feed 50Hz AC across their country. In a vacuum the wavelength is 6,000 km, but a real transmission line reduces the propagation speed so the wavelength would be much less, possibly only 5,000 km. The distance across Russia - east to west - is over 9,000 km; a quarter of which is 2,250 km. So a quarter-wavelength at 50 Hz could easily be achieved. One is simply that these are independent private corporations. They evolved separately, expanding out from some regional center. Another likely appeared during WW2/ColdWar ... safety through segmentation. One grid goes down and the rest are likely still usable. It's not nationwide paralysis. Getting phase just right, the equation and implementation must be just insane at this point. Tesla likely understood the mentioned transmission-line effect, did the math, but the scale in his day was relatively small. It is no wonder we get 'emergent behavior' from large power grids these days - keeping everything humming in harmony is a vast engineering problem. DC links - the electronics to do that efficiently have not been around all THAT long. What surprises me is that there exists an affordable insulation material that will withstand 800kvdc. Texas USA ... it is actually a number of power corps, mini-grids. Most made a sort of devil's deal ... they can deliver cheaply, but skimped on robustness/redundancy features. Seems most people prefer 'cheap' and will just bear with any outages - but Texas is mostly a 'frontier' mentality. Big coastal cities, people want the power always on and will pay for that instead.
