The human mind is full of "opposing" viewpoints, indeed I'd say "different people" each following their own train of thought, logic, imperatives. Freud went too far in trying to categorize - it's far more blended than that. Sometimes, esp when you're about to go to sleep, you can detect switching between mental narratives - and might realize that those narratives had been going on for awhile, each in their own little container. There are also "different people" who deal with real- world events. It can be as mild as boring folks who punch the gas when a yellow light appears. It can be as extreme as killing and eating people when famine or worse crops up. Those modes of thinking were always "in there" - 'conserved' over vast time. IMHO it's "Darwinian" ... "most adaptive". I'll not diss "science" - it's a Best Try and though it may take decades/centuries it'll eventually get the Best Take on what's going on and why. Now in the more Small Picture ... that can get ugly ... I have a 30-year-old book outlining how this was developing in academia ... "soft truths" .... The "Art Students" want a totally subjective reality, all "truths" adjustable, revisable, ignorable, in the name of what they'd LIKE to be true (at the moment). THEY cannot really get what they want - but they CAN do a LOT of damage in trying.
