It is a long-standing debate, perhaps best exemplified by mathematics.
Are mathematical relations inherent to reality, i.e. discoverable,
or are they mere inventions of the human mind?

Consider the quantity pi, which is the ratio of the circumference
of a circle to its diameter.

Circles (and spheres, etc.) exist in nature and thus so does the quantity
pi.  There can be no denying that mathematics is discovered and not
invented.

Consider the real phenomenon of length.  There is no denying that
between any two points there is a distance or length.  Yet to mathematically
explicate this idea of length required centuries of effort culminating
in the REAL ANALYSIS of the 19th century, and again, this was discovered
and not invented.

Consider entropy, which is the number of ways a system can be arranged.
There is no denying that the law of entropy is inherent to reality and
has been discovered and not invented.

Underlying all of mathematical science is something called the
ACTION PRINCIPLE.  In essence, a mathematical discovery called the
Lagrangian describes that all "changes" in nature (and change is
the fundamental "thing" of all reality) will minimize the ACTION.

This single principle, which underlies everything from mechanics
and electromagnetics to general relativity and quantum mechanics,
has been discovered and not invented.

Discovery, however, depends on human perception, and that perception
is either natural or augmented through technological or mathematical
devices. This perception allows us to construct "models" of reality
and such models are limited only by our perception.

As perception improves, our models will be refined, but our models
are never invented but always discovered.
