Most "Design Divas" are art students.

Being art students, yes, they lack tehcnical chops.  Additionally, art 
students like drawing pictures, and while it is possible to "draw 
pictures" in terminal land (ASCII art, etc.) the result is usually very 
poor compared to the much better looking pictures those same art 
students can draw in GUI land.

So the result is you get most of the design divas screwing around with 
the GUI's, because the GUI's are "picture based" interfaces.
