It clearly isnt as simple as that given that two Apple droids didn't
do it like that.

He can in fact prove that he did buy that
ipad, and legally that is all he needs to do.

And even if he couldn't do that, because he had lost
or discarded that receipt, or never had one because
he bought it used, legally Apple STILL has to reset
that ipad if it has not been reported as stolen.

Of course they know that, he has the receipt he got when he bought it.
