  AFAICT, that's not the case here. IIRC, Don said his supplier got them
from an authorized re-seller. If so, Apple should followup any fsck-ups
of *its* re-sellers.

  *If* Don's supplier is 'grey market', the Apple should allso followup,
because, considering the size of the supplier and their openess of doing
business, Apple should go after them like a ton of bricks.

  Once the device is working again, isn't their a way to recover (the
information of) the original Apple ID or *excahnge* that ID for another
known one?

  I ask, because second hand smart-phones/tablets are *very* common and
I strongly doubt that this (Apple ID) information is often/nearly_always
passed from the previous to the current owner.

[If not, I'll ask my iRelative if (s)he has this info for hir second
hand iPhone! :-)]
