I'll claim one point of a possible [very large 
number]--Lempel–Ziv–Welch.  Looks mostly middle eastern.  I don't know 
who gave the lectures I sat through.

I had completely forgotten that there were three names involved.

Still a fascinating design that still seems a little counter-inuitive, 
like Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler's* "Spread Spectrum " invention.
