The GIF is also a lot different than it used to be, corresponding with
modern computers' greater ability and memory/capacity.  Gone is the
spinning, 16 bit "Under Construction" graphic.  Now it's used to show quick
clips of video, and there are clever mpg2gif converters that make it happen. 
IMGUR.com is full of them, and even I enjoy them.  (Better than Flash!)

GIF fills a niche no other format does, for better or for worse.
