It can look forward to dying a natural death rather than being lynched by a
mob ...

WebM is quite nice.  Chrome browser can read it well - it delivers better
video/audio for fewer bytes, the porn sites have integrated, and history
shows once you need support for a particular format to consume porn, the
market speaks soon and loudly.
