I've ignored most of the thread about Gates and Jobs ... too much of the
same arguments we've read for decades now.

I am however surprised that this far into the thread there have been no
mention of anyone from the "mini" generation of computing ... no mention
of DEC or the others.

Also thought I'd see Richard M Stallman by now.  Love him or hate him,
he thinks deeply about things that matter and is typically proven right
in hindsight: call it the tragedy of being confined to pyrhhic
victories.

I'd mention Jack Tramiel, if only because his hardware changed my life.
Yeah yeah, Ritchie and Ada and all those other legends, it almost goes
without saying.  But as late as 1995 I was hired to do some CAD work for
a company whose business ran on VMX.[1]  I thought that was pretty awesome.

[1] Microstation.  Benchley promptly gave up producing software for non
Intel platforms, and my company decided to throw in the towel and use
AutoCAD like the rest of the planet.  Sad times for software
heterogeneity!  Word has it, AutoCAD also wanted to keep producing for
Unix but Microsoft strong armed them into dropping other OSes.  Boo
hiss.
