What's the question?

In the Unix world, the OS continued as always, but at some point (and I
don't know the year), X came along to ride on top of it. That continues
today with Linux.

Are you asking when a GUI of some sort first arrived, or when an operating
system arrived that had the GUI integrated into it? There is a difference.

WIndows in the early days was a failure, but it had the Windows riding
onto of the traditional MS-DOS. Then later, Windows integrated
differently, so the OS ran Windows from startup.

Others have pointed out early "GUIs", so if it's the former, Next couldn't
be it. If it's the latter, I thought Next was a GUI riding on top of an
existing OS.
