I am a puzzled by the Unix folk having so many ways of handling the
GUI. I have heard of Gnome 1 2 3, KDE, X-Windows, Xfce, Unify

Which does Java use?

When you write a C program do you have to pick one? or do they share a
common core API?

It should not be considered an error when the user starts something
already started or stops something already stopped. This applies
to browsers, services, editors... It is inexcusable to
punish the user by requiring some elaborate sequence to atone,
e.g. open the task editor, find and kill some processes.
