I find Nigel's 4th and 5th suggestions (which are mirrored elsewhere) to 
be the most apparently applicable and idiomatic of those offered so far.

I offer yet another suggestion that I haven't seen yet: pass 
StringBuilder as the argument, and return boolean.  This is essentially 
like Andreas's #2 suggestion, except that it uses a convenient type 
already built into Java for the purpose.
