No, strings are immutable, so GetString() cannot alter the value of 
ReturnString.

I think Stephan Ram's answer is roughly what I would do.

String returnString;
Thagomizor thangomizor = new Thagomizor();
thangomizor.thangomize();
if (!thangomizor.didItWork()) {
   throw new TooBadException();
} else {
   returnString = thangomizor.getString();
}
