It is certainly more helpful in that context.  But even today, primitive 
types play a wide variety of roles, and yet the types are not only 
(obviously) assignable to same-typed variables regardless of semantic 
differences, languages include implicit conversions as well between 
different primitive types.

The same reasons that motivated Simonyi to create Hungarian notation in 
the first place still exist today, even in modern languages, including Java.
