We do use them (with Swig and libcc), but overall, it is an awfully bloated 
approach.  If C is intended as system programming language, it fails to do 
that job.

Yes, but that's simply necessary for the purpose.  If you want to have a 
binary container that's intended to be interfaced to, you have to add 
information about how to interface it, in a way that is fairly easy to parse 
(and this is exactly what the Java .class file contains!).  C is not the be 
all and end all of languages, even if it is not as moribund as you 
originally thought.
