And, I assume you weren't paying attention when Hugh said
programmers "on comp.lang.forth" ...

Microsoft, Google, and Apple have around 250K employees. It's
possible that well over 50% are programmers for any of them, but
let's assume it's 10% or less to be conservative. That's 25K
non-Forth programmers at just three companies in one industry...
If Forth is doing well, where is the equivalent Forth market?

Any single company in the automotive industry or brokerage
industry is likely to have thousands of programmers. That's very
probably many times the quantity of Forth programmers for every
company you've cited over two decades.

Was this a recent post?

I see one post by you in 2008 and another in 2009 mentioning "GE
Multilin ... multiplexers". I see another in 2012 again
mentioning GE. I see a few before I started reading here, such as
one in 1999 mentioning NASA, FedEx, Boeing and another in 2003
mentioning Aerospace Corp and BEI. Other than that, I'm back to
1999 without seeing a "long list of companies" in any of the posts
by you with "Swiftx" or "SwiftForth" in them. Of course, there
are 1200 or more references to those two words by you, so perhaps
it's within one of those adverts somewhere... But, without a
direct link and only searching for it, I'm not finding it at the
moment.

Also, there is no context on how many Forth programmers are
employed by the companies you cite. How is anyone to know if
their use of Forth is trivial? (likely, IMO) If I search for the
companies above and posts by you, without "Swiftx" or
"SwiftForth", even more posts mentioning more companies are
found. Again, they're without any mention of how many they employ
as Forth programmers. They don't mention "Swiftx" or "SwiftForth"
in the same post either...

multiplexers

They could very well be using Forth if it's an old design. A
successful design can be manufactured for a long time. A company
I worked for in the mid 1990's used an 8051. Since their product
line-up and designs haven't changed, it's likely still used to
this day. However, the chip form factor they used might've
changed. It's possible the microprocessor was changed too, if
they squeezed out more costs. However, that requires the
additional cost of someone to reprogram their software...

AFAICT, there is no indication on that page that they use Forth.
So, it's entirely possible the company you cited might've been
using Forth in the past, but not anymore. If they are, it's truly
scary to think they're using Forth for SCADA.

I'd definately question what type of volume they're getting. I'd
suspect well under 1K per month at most, i.e., small company
scale. From the appearance of the front face of the devices, an
8051 is probably overkill...
