AFAIK, the only people > [still alive] > on comp.lang.forth who have ever made money from Forth, > are Elizabeth Rather, Stephen Pelc, and myself. I inserted "still alive" for accuracy. There are a number of individuals who were on comp.lang.forth in the past who made money from Forth who are now deceased. I also inserted it to reiterate the notion that Forth, it's programmers, and it's job market are dying or dead. > There is also the strange case of Mark Wills, who is selling a > Forth cartridge for the TI99/4A. When I said above, "make > money from Forth," I meant in the real-world --- hobbyist > projects don't count, even if you can find other hobbyists who > will buy your stuff. A lot of hobbyist systems have the > *potential* of being professional systems --- but until this > is actually done at least once, then the system doesn't count > as a professional system. Just how small was the company you coded for ... again? Three people? Four? Five? I.e., was that company really much more than one person selling _your_ work? And, couldn't that work, by one person - you, be classified as "hobbyist"? It was _only_ the work of one person... Didn't Mark take the smarter path by selling his own work himself, or attempting to? > Other than myself, who has ever been paid significant money for > writing Forth code that got used in a real-world product? Wait a minute, according to you, you never were paid "significant money" for coding you did in Forth: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/comp.lang.forth/VJ-iu9ig9zg/gLNj6WZ2QgMJ So, if we subtract you from your own list (LOL!) of three people, that leaves two... (Apparently, I'm the only one around here paying any attention, at least some of the time...) > This would be a product that competes legitimately against > similar C-based products, and which has some kind of value > to customers who don't care whether it is Forth or C internally Who doesn't care if it is Forth or C internally? Someone has to maintain the code, either the customer or the software house. Trust me. They care. > By "significant money" I mean enough to live on --- getting > paid a one-time fee of $300 is somewhat noteworthy, Is that $300 a reference to what Testra supposedly paid you for two years of contract employment at $10/hour as a consultant, or to Mark Wills? (Think about it...) If the tale you tell is true, you've probably won the award for the lowest paid consultant in the history of programming, hands down. > If nobody is making any money, then what exactly are > you thankful for? That's what I said, but I pointed people to the correct path. You're still insisting Forth is that path. How long do you have to work as a cabbie to realize it isn't? How many times do you have to complain about Forth killing your resume? Rod Pemberton
