Cardbook for example, click on the extension in settings, scroll down the page and there is 
"automatic updates    x default   o On     o off"

Just click of off.
cardbook *was* having issues.    https://gitlab.com/CardBook/CardBook/-/issues/1771 has a new 
version in the next to the last comment.   98.4    Seems to fix a lot of my issues.
