I finally resorted to downgrading Thunderbird from 128 to 115. With 128, I found that while Cardbook 98.x is buggy, 94.5 is just as buggy in different ways - the New Contact compose/edit windows was empty, that is, I couldn't add or edit a contact! Inexplicably, this only happened on one of my computers Cardbook is too important to me and I'm tired of trying to troubleshoot it, so I went back to a known working combination, Thunderbird 115.18.0 + Cardbook 94.4.
